Let Every Voice Be Heard: A Social Justice Concert
Wednesday, March 30th at 2 pm in the Boyd Recital Hall
Co-sponsored by the Women’s & Gender Studies Program, the Department of Music, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the College of Performing Arts; Let Every Voice Be Heard: A Social Justice Concert is an event that will feature student and faculty performances of music focusing on themes of diversity and social justice and/or music written by composers with marginalized or underrepresented identities.
Dr. Melissa Klapper (Women’s & Gender Studies Program Coordinator) says, “This is a concert that celebrates and amplifies ALL voices by featuring music that tells a powerful story, explores themes of social justice, and integrates the human voice.”
This event is intended to spark discussions about diversity in performing arts, a goal which, according to Dr. Klapper, the College of Performing Arts has been especially invested in recently. The performances will be the prelude to a student panel discussion and Q&A session about these very issues. The panel, moderated by Dr. Klapper, will feature three students from the various departments co-sponsoring the event: Tim Hurtt (Music), Madeleine Herquet (Music), and Elliot Colahan (Musical Theater and Women’s & Gender Studies).
While not technically an Edelman CCCA event, this concert promises to be an engaging opportunity to explore the intersection of identity and music. In addition to exciting performances, there will be the opportunity to learn more about social justice as it relates to music– something that is quite inseparable from many peoples’ lives.
The event is free, open to the public, and does not require any pre-registration, so be sure to bring your friends!
