Writing Arts Incomplete Policy
A grade of Incomplete is a way to give a student an extension on assignments that goes past the date when faculty need to enter final grades. The option of taking an Incomplete is to help students who were poised to pass the class but experienced a life event/extenuating circumstances at the end of the semester that interfered with their ability to complete and submit the remaining work for the course on time.
When an eligible student opts to take an Incomplete, they work with the instructor to identify a due date for the missing coursework and a list of assignments to be completed. Once the work is submitted (within the deadline set by the instructor), the student’s final grade is determined, and the letter grade they receive replaces the IN (Incomplete) grade on their transcript.
To be eligible for an Incomplete in a Writing Arts or First-Year Writing course, a student needs to have already completed more than 50% of major assignments for the course. In other words, if a student is missing the majority of assignments for the course (major assignments, not just small homework assignments or in-class work) and is encountering extenuating circumstances or hardships, they are not eligible for an Incomplete; rather, a withdrawal is likely the best solution for their situation. We expect students to complete work in a timely manner throughout the semester and to communicate with their instructor when anything interferes with their ability to meet deadlines.
