The Department of Journalism prepares students to be successful news and media professionals.

The Journalism curriculum is grounded in the fundamentals of journalism history, law and ethics. Students learn the basics of reporting, writing and editing while covering campus events and local news in South Jersey. Our courses also provide the preparation and skills needed to compete in an fast-changing media landscape.

We offer both a B.A. and a Minor in Journalism.

The class sizes are small and instructors provide students with hands-on instruction and mentoring.

Our faculty members are experienced journalists who combine craft and scholarship. The full-time faculty frequently present at academic and professional conferences and publish their research in academic journals specializing in journalism and mass communication. Many of our courses are taught by working journalists from area news outlets such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, KYW NewsRadio, WHYY, Courier Post, The South Jersey Times and

There are opportunities for students to work and learn outside of the traditional classroom. Students write and publish the student newspaper The Whit, produce radio shows for WGLS, and operate the Rowan Television Network.

Our location in southern New Jersey enables students to connect with internships, alumni and professional networks in the Philadelphia area, the fourth largest media market in the nation, as well as in the New York City area.

Students intern at local news outlets such as Fox 29, The South Jersey Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, NBC10, Comcast SportsNet, and South Jersey Magazine, as well as national and international organizations like NBC, BBC America and Conde Nast.

Our alumni work across the nation at news organizations such as The New York Times, Associated Press, MSNBC, Chicago Tribune and U.S. World & News Report.

At Rowan University, we are excited about the future of journalism and preparing the journalists of the future.
