Art Education

Rowan’s Art Education program is well recognized at regional and national levels by professional teaching associations. We offer a strong curriculum based on the ever-changing/evolving research in our field. Students are introduced to the latest theory and innovative teaching practices involving: Lesson and curriculum design, differentiated instruction for special needs students; instruction in how to engage children with varieties of artistic media and, developing strategies for teaching aesthetics and art criticism, art history, and assessment.

Students begin their field experiences early, starting with sophomore level courses. These field experiences continue through their senior year with clinical internships in area public schools. Students develop a caring attitude and professional commitment through community and regional service projects. The Saturday Morning Art (smART) program brings children from the community to Westby for art lessons taught by our students and; we travel to area high schools to involve students in larger art projects culminate in an art exhibition held in Westby or in the Rowan University Art Gallery.

Art Education students take an active leadership role when they join Rowan’s National Art Education Association Student Chapter (NAEA SC). We travel to conventions in major cities so that our students can participate in workshops and partake in presentations by leaders in the field of Art Education. When Rowan Art Education students graduate, many will have already presented at the teachers’ association state and national conferences. Our graduates become professional leaders who participate in and contribute to their communities as art educators and engaged citizens.
