Daring Greatly: Creativity from Crisis

The 9/11 commission stated that we should “…find a way of routinizing, even bureaucratizing, the exercise of imagination.” Carlson’s dissertation proposes to devise a model and subsequent actions through the study of the crisis space that leads to creativity in bureaucracies. As Clausewitz wrote in On War, “Everything in war is simple but the simplest thing is difficult.” That statement sums up creativity within a bureaucracy: If you want the workforce to be creative – teach them how to be creative.
