Edelman CCCA DEI Committee
The CCCA DEI Committee works to promote diversity, equity and inclusion by developing and sustaining meaningful and collaborative relationships that result in a more diverse and inclusive community. The Committee centers the voices of our community to drive college-wide culturally sustaining initiatives and equitable opportunities.
To fulfill its mission, the Committee works to:
- Build DEI into the infrastructure of the college
- Offer a curriculum that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Establish DEI as central to messaging in the college
- Develop more cross-college engagement related to DEI
Since its inception, the Committee has:
- Advised the Dean’s Office on issues related to recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, students, and professional staff.
- Advocated for and fostered inclusive spaces, such as the creation of two lactation rooms in collaboration with the Department of Writing Arts and the Department of Art.
- Sponsored events that support and speak to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Recent examples of guest speakers include:
- Dana Rubin, author of Speaking While Female
- Dr. Alfred Martin, author of Trapped in the Generic Closet, to discuss representations of queer men in Blaack-cast sitcoms.
- Joe Jeffreys, Drag Historian
- National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) keynotes from ESPN journalist Katie Barnes, 76ers play-by-play announcer Kate Scott, and WNBA player, Layshia Clarendon
- Juan Llamas-Rodriguez, author of Border Tunnels: A Media Theory of the U.S.-Mexico Underground
- Consistently supported the Bunce Illumination Project for Rowan’s Pride celebration
- Annually awarded CCCA students who have demonstrated excellence in DEI
- Built DEI into the college curriculum process

Criteria considered for winner(s):
Winners were selected based on the duration, scope, and accomplishments outlined in their submitted materials (essay and resume). The following encompass the specific criteria considered for this award.
- Resume/background/contributions - What specific work has the student accomplished and how do they see this work fitting in with the CCCA mission statement
- Impact - Who is being impacted by this work (ie: demographics, identities) and how is this impact being felt across campus community?
- Filling a need - How has this work contributed to previous campus efforts and how does it set up future objectives?
- Leadership - Which position or positions have been held by the student in DEI-focused campus groups?
- Storytelling - The student is able to frame their contributions in a personal and engaging way. As a College, we recognize the impact of storytelling and that the personal is political.
- Self-reflection - The student is able to highlight both community and personal experiences as it relates to their academic and extracurricular efforts.
- Being descriptive and focused on a specific need - The essay reflects an instance or instances of detailed and clear contributions and accomplishments by the student. The student is able to identify intersections between their narrative and personal needs.
- Following outlined instructions to meet criteria - The essay reflects a student’s ability to effectively represent their contributions in a succinct and creative manner, while adhering to the guidelines presented to them.
